Two of the World's Richest Gold Districts
The Carlin and Cortez gold trends represent two of the world's richest gold mining districts. The Carlin Trend is North America's most prolific gold-producing area and the second-largest known gold resource in the world, after the Witwatersrand in South Africa. The Cortez Trend (also known as the Battle Mountain or Eureka Trend), located to the southwest, has produced less gold. But its potential is considered to be equal to, if not better than, the Carlin Trend.

The Cortez Trend is similar in size to the Carlin Trend. It includes Barrick's Cortez, Pipeline, and Cortez Hills mines (>18M ounces of gold produced to date), plus one of the largest discoveries in recent years (10M ounces measured and indicated) at Barrick's Goldrush deposit. The main area of focus on the Cortez Trend has been in this southern section, which includes the Robertson and Coral's Norma Sass, JDN and Eagle Claims. This region contains sedimentary rocks capable of hosting Carlin-style gold deposits created roughly 38 million years ago.
